Stop being such a hypocrite, Kim.
Kim Kardashian West broke the internet again this week with a naked bathroom selfie the star posted to celebrate International Women’s Day.
After some backlash from celebs like Bette Midler and Chloe Grace Moretz, and a lot of support from the likes of Emily Ratajkowski and Sharon Osbourne, the internet stands divided on whether the nudie was empowering or degrading.
Kim of course didn’t shy away from voicing her opinion on all of this in an essay posted one her website this week, in which she explains why her naked selfies make her a great role model.
“I am empowered by my body. I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me. And I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world.”
Good for you, Kim. However, I’m not buying it.
While I am all for women’s liberation and love to see women who are confident in their bodies, let’s not pretend that the true reason Kim posts photos like this isn’t attention, fame, and more money.
This woman has created an unbelievable empire from oversharing every detail of her life with the rest of the world. Her estimated net worth of $85 million is the result of monetised fame. According to Forbes, the reality TV star makes over half of her income through her video game app, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, while the other half of her earnings comes from taking part in her family’s reality TV show Keeping Up With The Kardashians and several other lucrative endorsement contracts.
Kim has made a very lucrative career out of flaunting her ass-ets.
I respect Kim for successfully turning a leaked sex tape scandal into a major career, but I can’t help but laugh at her essay. Obviously, Kim has a bangin’ body – and she knows it. Her cellulite-free curves and tiny waist are just as unattainable for most of us as the body of a Victoria’s Secret model, so saying she is “showing the world her flaws” does not even make sense. Which flaws? Her perfectly flat stomach? Her perky breasts? Her million dollar marble bathroom?
I want to see a naked selfie of Kim without makeup or flattering lighting, with greasy hair, after she’s had a pizza and her stomach is bloated like she’s three months pregnant. Then I’ll believe she’s confident in her own skin and wants other women to feel the same.
Another part of her essay reads “In all seriousness, I never understand why people get so bothered by what other people choose to do with their lives, I don’t do drugs, I hardly drink, I’ve never committed a crime —and yet I’m a bad role model for being proud of my body?”
Sweetheart, your entire career is based on people being bothered by what you do, so stop being such a hypocrite.
Kim obviously knew her selfie would get a lot of attention and media coverage, and the fact she captioned it with “When you’re like I have nothing to wear LOL” supports the notion this was not about feminism or empowerment, but yet another way to market herself and make sure she stays relevant.
As far as I’m concerned, Kim can post as many photos of her boobs and butt as she likes, but it would be refreshing to see her be honest about her intentions. How about a caption reading “It only took three makeup artists, two hair stylists and 37 bad selfies to get this one which makes me look hot. Please buy my app.”
